starla is a magic-user originally from a distant city on kelp's land, one where technology akin to present-day human standards haven't quite been reached, but fashion trends can be described as.. strange, compared to society's collective age. she comes from a family who, despite having zero desire to leave or change their lifestyles, are very 'traditional' and discouraged from trying anything too 'new' or 'strange.' unfortunately, she was the black sheep, so she (ironically enough) moved to the sleepy, fantasy town of pearlmire for her fresh start.
in spite of her hardship, starla is quite the cheery character; her disposition can be infectious or insufferable, depending who you ask. she specializes in spellcasting and perception-based skills, with a fixation on emotional bonds like love and friendship. don't get it twisted- though she takes no issue with playing matchmaker, starla wants her special someone to be attracted without any magic use. her two biggest dreams in life are finding her true love & becoming skilled enough for an opportunity to study under cupid.
although she seems almost carefree, starla has a strong moral code and will absolutely refuse to engage in things like deception or fraud. she loves giving relationship advice, but also won't hesitate to tell you to DUMP THEM if the situation calls. she is fiercely protective of those she cares for and will do what it takes to keep harm from coming to them. she's a skilled fighter, using her flying broomstick as a staff for battle.
starla began as what was expected to be a one-off concept, just as a design using colors and design tropes i enjoyed using around the time she was made. since then she's been my go-to for breaking art block, and though she hasn't gotten much in the way of character development, she's been really fun to invent outfits for. she shares a universe with kelp, aspen and ditka for organizational purposes, but is technically standalone as she's not considered a 'main.'
every year we try to draw her in a new outfit, since that's what we consider her birthday :) here's all the pieces we've done/been able to dig up from our files.
